"All Life is Transient" in Wolfsburg.

"Moved," the Installation in the Art Gallery in Wolfsburg.

We visited the art galley in Wolfsburg on Wednesday to see an installation entitled "Moved" by Christian Boltanski.   He has collected together numerous photographs of unknown people, not knowing anything about them, or whether they are still alive or dead.  These countless photographs have been printed onto fine lawn, which are rotated on a track around the huge space of the galley, to the accompaniment of the relentless beating of Christian´s heart.

His aim was to try the capture the feeling of not knowing what has happened to the souls and spirits, who float before us through space and time.  It was very thought provoking, and rather eerie with the heartbeat playing in the background.  A large, digital number with red numbers displayed the seconds in Christian´s life, from his birth until the moment we watched the board yesterday morning!

The Movement of Lost People.

These photographs, printed in black and white on lawn, were moving around the ceiling to the accompaniment of a relentless heatbeat, beating out the seconds of our lives.

The Voices of the Lost in the Japanese Garden.

This garden contained a number of bells hanging from curved metal supports.  If you look carefully they can be seen as dark specks against the back wall.  When the wind blew, the bells tinkled to the movement of the breeze, and it was easy to imagine them as the calls of lost people.  I always feel that way when I light a candle in remembrance of my mother, although candlelight invokes a warmer and a not so lost feeling.   All very interesting.

The day ended with pasta, Spaghetti Bolognese, beers and coffee in an Italian restaurant.   That bought us back to earth again!
